Reservation A Necessity or A burden

Reservation – why, its achievement and its failure to deliver

Well before we slam the politicians and all let’s look in to the past and observe why was the reservations done in the first place and its present impact.

In the past(before independence) its true that the higher classes enjoyed more benefits - I mean what all the titles like Rai Bahadur,  and etc were mean tot create a social unrest which was utilised to its best by the British.

It seems that to reverse things a bit and also appease the SC/ST s reservations were made. Moreover the census of 1932 too showed that the SC/ST s and OBCs were larger in numbers. So it can be said that for general appeasement of masses it was also a political step by the Country makers at that time. Moreover with the proximity to USSR at that time the word "equality" may have sounded different at that time.

Reservations were made not only in castes but also between states at lets keep J & K out of this since it had its own problems to deal with.

If we look into most of the Government PSUs made after independence we would observe that they intentionally kept Maharashtra and West Bengal out of it purview since they were the most developed states during in and around independence. Former being the seat of the commercial capital and the later being the seat of the country's capital in the past. Rather New Delhi being the capital of India only for 96 years whereas Calcutta was the capital from 1772 to 1911 - 139 years.

Now initially there was a time frame for implementing the "social upliftment" - the term coined by all those pro-reservation politicians (may be that includes everyone except Sidhu pajji) now. After that time frame got over it was found that they still lag behind so it was increased and more time was given but it reached its peak with the "Mandal commission".

Now after 60 years of independence if "social upliftment" has not been achieved then it clearly indicates the process thus chosen was wrong. Reservation always meant to deny the deserving from the pie and give it to some who doesn't deserve it. Frankly this whole drama is appeasing the masses but there is a flip side of it. It's this that General Category class is still ahead. It meant that due to competitions for fewer seats the generals are getting better day by day. And they are still ahead despite of all the reservations against merit.

Who is actually benefiting, are the labour class of SC/ST s benefiting? NO!!! The service class is biggest and perhaps the only benefactor. The people whom we meet everybody in our offices, schools, parks, restaurants belonging to this class are "THE" biggest benefactor.

Reservation in my opinion should be made for every one who heralds from a lower economic status for one-time for either govt. jobs or govt. educational institution. Once availed it cannot be used for the next 3 generations and that too after calculating the economic status. This would ensure that it comes to an end one day.

There is another point I would like to make is why did politicians suddenly warmed up for reservations in premier institutions and private firms. Well, during Mandal commission, our present PM Dr. Manmohan Singh did introduce something called "Liberalisation". Credit to him  for having such a long-sighted concept, slowly it became apparent in the late nineties early millennium that there aren't sufficient jobs in the government sector and most of them were going after private firms - that meant that reservation in government sector is not that valuable any more. So this is the only way out. But kudos to Private firms and IIMs, IITs and not forget the medical fraternity who has the biggest influence in the social setup who stood up against this "social menace". But above all the Supreme Court who proved time and again that it would not be the part of cheap politics.

Reservation

I am not really against reservation for obc,but i firmly believe that reservtion should be at the lower level rather than grad and post grad level.

Binu

"To make India a country

"To make India a country where each family will be having a tax paying person is not impossible . . ." True man, its not impossible but how many jobs you can create for more than 1 billion person. The simple reality is that we are far from the real root cause of all the problems in our country. It is "Less resource and more demand" Population + Disparity + Education - some how we have to get rid of all these

No 1 will oppose reservation

No 1 will oppose reservation if it is given to the right people. The problem with reservation in india is that it exist only because of politics and the advantage is taken by only few who never deserves it.

"less resource & more

"less resource & more demand". i too agree, but we don't lack brain power which is the basic need that can create many oppurtunities. our country is having a mojor resource " YOUTH " which many developed nations lack.as a paradigm we can consider the software industry in which many affluent companies from many nations are in race to establish their centers here. for which investment is done by them.still we enjoy the jobs by offering them our brain power.in a similar way we can create many oppurtunities with potent brain power.

RESERVATION

Reservation is necessary specially for a country like india(a developing country). Here people from backward classes like SC,ST or OBC are suppressed in every form and field. The backward people should get the finanacial support from govt. But a flaw in our system is reservation(admission in an institution) is not on the basis of merit. The reservation should be based on merit basis.

Reservation should be given

Reservation should be given but on the basis of financial status. It should be given to financially poor and backward community who do not have the resources...

there should not be any form

there should not be any form of reservation, neither financial status nor any other creteria could be basis for it.since rich people and other knowlegable section are largely using &those who dont know are deprived of it.

it should be on part of poor people that if want success &means they have to work according to that ,reservation only gives birth to caste differences . even after 50 yrs these castes are still dependent on reservation to get addmission in college .

is 50yrs is not enough to stand on their own ?

i m not opposing reservation , but .....................................................................

there should not be any

there should not be any reservations in india bcoz d purpos of it is nvr fulfild.it l do mor harm thn gud.d benifits of quotas r reapd by d powrful n influnential who dnt need ny assistanc.it l,in additn,do bad 2 d general peopl bcoz their opportunits wil b cut shrt by thes quotas

no reservation

i completely agree with you that dere shuld be no reservation..it is mstly used in the wrong way only...people who r nt even worth it take the advantage of dese resrvation quotas,n the needy ones r left with no option...many things remain unchnged due to this...and its not only in the field of studies but in others too..politicians takes money fron the goverment in order to develop the country by saying this much money is reserved for this so this musch is required..but the truth is know by all of us that hardly half of it is used in d development whereas rest of it goes in their pocket..well this was just an example to prove my point...there are many other cases where resrvation proves itself to b unjustified

reservation policy

xcuse me all i fully agree vd priyank dt in india d resevation policy has bkm a mere political stunt. reservation should be given to those people who r financially weak e.g., such people who r nt able to make their children study even at 10 or +2 levels because of the hefty fees. its surprising to find those people who can support their chidren well r makin the mockery of the meaning of the reservation policies n humanity itself actually these people act in a diabolical way they snatch the share of the needy so i think n its difficult for me to understand whether these people have lost their moral values if god has given them enough to live then y they r nt able to use their functional part of their brain to make a poor, apoor. these r the people who r responsible for the underdevelopment of india n these r the people who have made india a corrupt political system.i have much to say n i vl..................

it's Shivalik

Say yes to reservation

We all should say yes to 100% reservation in goverment run institutions.

And none in prvt. institutions. It should not be given on economic basis as it is not the tool to alleviate poverty but to alleviate socila stigama.

Against reservation

The entire society now should be divided upon the economic status and the One below the poverty line should be given the highest % of reservation and the next less higher % to the one above the poverty line.It should be followed like that to develop a nation like ours. Though this idea would be like a DAY DREAM which will not at all happen in INDIA ruled by the Greedy politicians.

Reservation – why, its achievement and its failure to deliver

This comment has been moved here.

Reservation is a must

Reservation is required if we want to establish a society based on equality. Our anti-reservation stand is based on our ignorance of the ground reality.

Reservation, definitely is

Reservation, definitely is the biggest challenge in front of our country. It is sad to see no one gives their opinion with out being bias to any community. Those who get benefit always supports it and those who are in the receiving side always resist it. This is natural but we all need to go a bit higher and think about our country.

As such a nation cannot be developed with half rich and half poor. If we dare to imagine making India a developed Nation by 2020 we need to take certain hard decision for the benefit of the whole country. I am not saying that just by giving reservation everything will fall in place; In fact I am totally against the reservation policy in its current form. First we need to understand - "whom we are giving reservation and why we are providing it".

The sole aim of reservation in any form should be to help the underprivileged and assist them to be a part of the newly developed India. India as a nation has developed a lot since independence but we have not achieved what we could have done with the kind of natural and human resource available to us. There is no need to compare a South Korea with India, both of which were almost in same stage in terms of GDP, per capita income till 1947. But both choose different path afterwards and the result is obvious to all. The only thing that we lacked is the will power (rather I should say political will power) and selflessness.

Reservation is indisputably required in a country like India where disparity exists in every possible part. But the reservation should be aimed at developing poor people not for affluent communities and that to with the desire of remaining in power. Many of us who have spent most of their life in cities can never envisage the way tribal spend their life in hill areas. After 60 years of independence electricity has not reached many villages and same is the case with roads. Well, just by making reservation, the problem will not be solved. True. But providing these services for free will also not solve the purpose. We need to make all the citizens of India capable of having a decent life with out asking/expecting anything from the government. To make India a country where each family will be having a tax paying person is not impossible but in the beginning we all are required to make few compromises and all of us should be ready for it.

Nishit

Nishit Bhai,

I do agree with you regarding the political will power when compared against South Korea. But there are differences, to start with it is a much smaller nation than ours. They speak only one language, there is no probably no country which has 16 official languages - this makes communication easier, their population is less, they don't caste based election and politics, their literacy levels are higher and above all they love their country and their moral values are much higher. Rather its a unique trait of mongolian race. Mind you, this is not a racist comment.

Now, present day scenario in india is this that it seems that there will be more political partical party "netas" than voters themselves. "Ghatbandhan" - Sharing of power, inside support, outside support. Any one attempting to do the right thing is pulled down. If you have seen the recent Tata Tea ad - Hum aapke vote magne ay hai. What is you experience in governing ? What is your performance. That should be the key rather than I belong to some dalit caste and I will give you reservation is this and that. The day we are able to increase our moral values, increase literacy (by literacy I dont mean matric pass, I mean a sound mind to understand whats good and whats bad) we wont take much time to become a "DEVELOPED NATION".

Ciao, Subhashis
